Tempe Arizona is between Phoenix and Mesa. It is home to Arizona State University. Tempe was founded by Jack Swilling, who build the first irrigation cannels in Phoenix, when he wanted to extend agriculture and brought water to the area. The town was named by Darrel Duppa who said, "Its beautiful location reminded him of the lovely vale in Thessaly, celebrated by the Tempe Real Estateclassical poets."

Crops of wheat, barley, and oats ensured a steady business for the nearby Hayden Mill. The milled flour was hauled to forts and other settlements throughout the territory. By the 1890s, some farmers started growing new cash crops such as dates and citrus fruits.

The Territorial Normal School was founded by the Arizona State Legislator in 1885. In 1957 it became Arizona State University.

The end of World War II saw an influx of families, many who had served in nearby bases.

The Maricopa and Phoenix Railroad, built in 1887, crossed the Salt River at Tempe, which made Tempe accessible to the whole country. The Roosevelt Dam was completed in 1911, securing agriculture in the Tempe region.

Today, Tempe is a modern city with easy access to Phoenix and pleasantly influenced by the University of Arizona.
