Gilbert Arizona is south of Mesa and just northeast of Chandler. It is a relatively new town. William "Bobby" Gilbert built a siding for the Arizona Eastern Railway in 1902. The town sprung up around the siding. The completion of Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated Canals in 1911 made Gilbert a prime farming area, and until the late 1920s, it was known as “The Hay Capitol of the World.” The town was incorporated on July 6, 1920. In the 1970s the Town Council approved some 53 square miles of county land. Even though the population was only 1,971 in 1970 the Council recognized that Gilbert would eventually grow and develop much like the surrounding communities of Tempe, Mesa, and Chandler. That vision has been fulfilled. Today, Gilbert draws 1000 or more new residents each month. Gilbert has made the transition from an agricultural region to a modern city and urban area. Good planning assures Gilbert's growth will be smart. A real effort is made to include all citizens in the planning process. Planning is based on a "city of villages" concept, creating parks, trails and businesses all within walking distance of residential communities, making for great livability. The Gateway Character Area, adjacent to the Williams Gateway Airport and the east campus of Arizona State University is an example of this kind of planning. Covering about 4,320 acres, the Gateway area will create a neighborhood village feeling, bringing in thousands of new residents. There will be shopping, services as well as lively entertainment. The annual Gilbert Days celebration offers three days of parades, arts and crafts and a rodeo. The business climate is good and Gilbert is considered “business friendly.” Gilbert expects to double its retail space in the next couple of years.
